Waiting On Wednesday (21)

Wildcat Fireflies by Amber Kizer

Publisher: Delacorte
Pub. Date: July 12, 2011

----------------------------------

Meridian Sozu is a Fenestra—the half-human, half-angel link between the living and the dead. She has the dark responsibility of helping souls transition safely into the afterlife. If people die without the help of a Fenestra, their souls are left vulnerable to be stolen by the Aternocti, a dark band of forces who disrupt the balance of good and evil in the world and cause chaos.
Having recently lost her beloved Auntie—the woman who showed her what it meant to be a Fenestra—Meridian has hit the road with Tens, her love and sworn protector, in hopes of finding another Fenestra. Their search leads them to Indiana, where Juliet, a responsible and loving teenager, works tirelessly in the nursing home where she and several other foster kids are housed. Surrounded by death, Juliet struggles to make a loving home for the younger kids, and to protect them from the violent whims of their foster mother. But she is struggling against forces she can't understand . . . and even as she feels a pull toward the dying, their sickness seems to infect her, weighing her down. . . .
Will Meri and Tens find Juliet in time to save her from a life of misery and illness? And will Meri and Tens' own romance weather the storms of new discoveries?
 ----------------------------------------------
I have been waiting for the sequel to Meridian for what seems like forever and now it's finally just a month away. I read Meridian back when it first came out in 2009 and loved it. I'm sure that Amber Kizer's newest book will live up to the awesomeness of her first. I can't wait to read it and see!

Waiting On Wednesday (19)

The Extraordinary Secrets of April, May, & June by Robin Benway
Publisher: Razorbill
Pub. Date: August 3, 2010
--------------
Three sisters, three extraordinary, life-changing powers!

I hugged my sisters and they fit against my sides like two jigsaw pieces that would never fit anywhere else. I couldn’t imagine ever letting them go again, like releasing them would be to surrender the best parts of myself.

Three sisters share a magical, unshakable bond in this witty high-concept novel from the critically acclaimed author of Audrey, Wait! Around the time of their parents’ divorce, sisters April, May, and June recover special powers from childhood—powers that come in handy navigating the hell that is high school. Powers that help them cope with the hardest year of their lives. But could they have a greater purpose?

April, the oldest and a bit of a worrier, can see the future. Middle-child May can literally disappear. And baby June reads minds—everyone’s but her own. When April gets a vision of disaster, the girls come together to save the day and reconcile their strained family. They realize that no matter what happens, powers or no powers, they’ll always have each other.

Because there’s one thing stronger than magic: sisterhood.
--------
Having recently read Audrey, Wait! and LOVED it, I'm so excited to read Robin Benway's latest. The synopsis looks super-interesting anyway. Bring it on!

The Lighter Side of Life and Death by C.K. Kelly Martin
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Pub. Date: May 25, 2010

Sixteen-year-old Mason Rice is having the night of his life. He's just delivered an incredible performance in the school play, basked in celebratory afterglow vibes at the party of the year, and lost his virginity to one of his best friends—the gorgeous but previously unobtainable Kat Medina. His dreams are coming true, and the future looks golden.

Unfortunately, Kat sees things very differently. Crossing the friendship line was a big mistake, and all she wants is to forget it and move on, even if that means forgetting Mason altogether. What's a guy to do? Well, if you're Mason, you hang your hopes on the first attractive twenty-three-year-old you cross paths with. At first Mason wonders if he's imagining the chemistry . . . until Colette invites him over to her apartment. Suddenly Mason's living in a whole new world.

--------------------
I was initially attracted to this book because I've loved all the author's previous novels. The cover is gorgeous as well. Then I read the synopsis and immediately thought "I HAVE TO HAVE THIS!" I can't wait for its' release!

I Kissed a Zombie and I Liked It by Adam Selzer
Publisher: Random House Children's Books
Pub. Date: January 26, 2010

Algonquin “Ali” Rhodes, the high school newspaper’s music critic, meets an intriguing singer, Doug, while reviewing a gig. He’s a weird-looking guy—goth, but he seems sincere about it, like maybe he was into it back before it was cool. She introduces herself after the set, asking if he lives in Cornersville, and he replies, in his slow, quiet murmur, “Well, I don’t really live there, exactly. . . .”

When Ali and Doug start dating, Ali is falling so hard she doesn’t notice a few odd signs: he never changes clothes, his head is a funny shape, and he says practically nothing out loud. Finally Marie, the school paper’s fashion editor, points out the obvious: Doug isn’t just a really sincere goth. He’s a zombie. Horrified that her feelings could have allowed her to overlook such a flaw, Ali breaks up with Doug, but learns that zombies are awfully hard to get rid of—at the same time she learns that vampires, a group as tightly-knit as the mafia, don’t think much of music critics who make fun of vampires in reviews. . . .
------------------
Zombies? Yes, please. This looks fun and original. I can't wait to read it in January!

Something Like Fate by Susane Colasanti
Pub. Date: May 13, 2010
Publisher: Viking Juvenile

Sorry, no synopsis. But from the cover, I think you can gather the basics.

I absolutely LOVE the cover. I think that alone would be enough to make me want to pick up this book. I've solidly liked all of Susane Colasanti's previous novels so if that's any indication of how this one will go over, I think it's safe to say that this will be something I'll want to pick up as soon as it's out.

I absolutely loved Kiss Me Kill Me and Kisses and Lies so I can't wait to read the next installment. Mystery, drama, AND British accents? Sounds like my kind of book. Does anyone know whether this is a trilogy or a series? In any case, I'm dying to get my hands on this one!

Restless souls and empty hearts

Brooklyn can't sleep. Her boyfriend, Lucca, died only a year ago, and now her friend Gabe has just died of an overdose. Every time she closes her eyes, Gabe's ghost is there waiting for her. She has no idea what he wants or why it isn't Lucca visiting her dreams.

Nico can't stop. He's always running, trying to escape the pain of losing his brother, Lucca. But when Lucca's ghost begins leaving messages, telling Nico to help Brooklyn, emotions come crashing to the surface.

As the nightmares escalate and the messages become relentless, Nico reaches out to Brooklyn. But neither of them can admit that they're being haunted. Until they learn to let each other in, not one soul will be able to rest.

--------------------

I devoured Schroeder's last novel so I'm really excited to get my hands on her latest. The synopsis looks a little creepy but interesting nonetheless. I love the cover as well. Can't wait to read this one!

Good thing for Hanna, she's far from normal. As this crazy girl meets an even crazier town, only two things are certain: Anything can happen and no one is safe.

First of all, the cover on this one is beautiful. I love the shades of purple.
The premise also looks original and interesting. This looks like the kind of book that I enjoy most!

The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott
Pub. Date: April 6, 2010
Publisher: Simon Pulse

I liked him first, but it doesn't matter.
I still like him.
That doesn't matter either.
Or at least, it's not supposed to.

I've read awesome reviews of Elizabeth Scott's books in the past so I'm sure this one is no exception. I don't think there's any teenage girl who hasn't either been in the situation of liking your friend's boyfriend themselves or witnessed someone else in the same place. Anyone could relate to this one some level. Even if you haven't been there, it still sounds like an interesting story. I can't wait to see how the characters handle the situation and how everything plays out.

Sorry for posting this so early (it won't be released until 2010) but when I saw the cover, I couldn't resist!

Waiting On Wednesday (11)

How To Steal A Car by Pete Hautman
Pub. Date: September 1, 2009
Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.

Some girls act out by drinking or doing drugs. Some girls act out by sleeping with guys. Some girls act out by starving themselves or cutting themselves. Some girls act out by being a bitch to other girls.

Not Kelleigh. Kelleigh steals cars.

In How to Steal a Car, National Book Award winner Pete Hautman takes teen readers on a thrilling, scary ride through one suburban girl's turbulent life - one car theft at a time.

--------------------

Does this book look crazy, or what? That synopsis makes me want to run out to the bookstore right now and buy this. Too bad I have to wait almost three months until September! I like the cover a lot, too. Ah, so many awesome books, too long to wait!

Waiting On Wednesday (10)

The Cupcake Queen by Heather Hepler
Pub. Date: September 17, 2009
Publisher: Penguin

A confection of a novel, combining big city sophistication with small town charm. When her mother moves them from the city to a small town to open up a cupcake bakery, Penny’s life isn’t what she expected. Her father has stayed behind, and Mom isn’t talking about what the future holds for their family. And then there’s Charity, the girl who plays mean pranks almost daily. There are also bright spots in Hog’s Hollow—like Tally, an expert in Rock Paper Scissors, and Marcus, the boy who is always running on the beach. But just when it looks as though Penny is settling in, her parents ask her to make a choice that will turn everything upside down again. A sweet novel about love, creativity, and accepting life’s unexpected turns.
------------------

The cover is what originally made me take a second look at this book. I mean, those cupcakes look delicious! The synopsis, though, looks really interesting too. This is Heather Hepler's first solo novel, all her previous ones have been collaborations with Brad Barkley. I haven't read anything she's worked on before but I have some high expectations!

Splendor: A Luxe Novel by Anna Godbersen
Pub. Date: October 27, 2009
Publisher: HarperCollins

I wasn't able to find a synopsis but, you know, I don't even need one to know that I'm definitely going to like this book. I loved the rest of the series - they were simply amazing. Anna Godbersen has some serious talent on her hands.

And that cover. I love all the dresses on these books. The lavender is so pretty.

Alright, well, now I've had my fan-girly moment for the day!
If you couldn't tell, I'm a huge fan of this series. I'm counting the days until October 27th. Does anyone know of a widget or something for it? I'd love to post it in my sidebar...

Waiting On Wednesday (8)

Rage: A Love Story by Julie Anne Peters
Pub. Date: September 8, 2009
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers

Johanna is steadfast, patient, reliable; the go-to girl, the one everyone can count on. But always being there for others can’t give Johanna everything she needs—it can’t give her Reeve Hartt.

Reeve is fierce, beautiful, wounded, elusive; a flame that draws Johanna’s fluttering moth. Johanna is determined to get her, against all advice, and to help her, against all reason. But love isn’t always reasonable, right?

In the precarious place where attraction and need collide, a teenager experiences the dark side of a first love, and struggles to find her way into a new light.

----------------

Hmm..I've never read any books with homosexual characters so this one would definitely be a different read for me. I think it's important to be accepting and tolerant of those who prefer same-sex relationships, though, so this novel could be enlightening. The cover is pretty - I love her eye shadow!

Waiting On Wednesday (7)

Beautiful by Amy Reed
Pub. Date: October 6, 2009

She embraces the numbness she feels from the drugs, starts sleeping with an older boy, and gets pulled into a twisted friendship triangle that is tinged with violence and abuse. Cassie is trapped in a swift downward spiral, and there's no turning back.

-------------------------

This looks like a must-read issue book. I believe that this is Amy Reed's first novel so I'm excited to see how it turns out. Plus, the cover is...eye-catching. Raw. Gorgeous.

Impossible by Nancy Werlin (paperback)
Pub. Date: August 11, 2009
Publisher: Penguin Group

Lucy Scarborough is seventeen when she discovers that the women of her family have been cursed through the generations, forced to attempt three seemingly impossible tasks or to fall into madness upon their child's birth. Inspired by the ballad "Scarborough Fair," this spellbinding novel combines suspense, fantasy, and romance for an intense and masterfully original tale.

The paperback cover is soo much prettier than the hardback version, don't you think? The synopsis looks intriguing and I can't wait to get my hands on a copy!

Waiting On Wednesday (5)

Ballads of Suburbia by Stephanie Kuehnert
Pub. Date: July 21, 2009
Publisher: MTV

There are so many ballads. Achy breaky country songs. Mournful pop songs. Then there’s the rare punk ballad, the ballad of suburbia: louder, faster, angrier . . . till it drowns out the silence.

Kara hasn’t been back to Oak Park since the end of junior year, when a heroin overdose nearly killed her and sirens heralded her exit. Four years later, she returns to face the music. Her life changed forever back in high school: her family disintegrated, she ran around with a whole new crowd of friends, she partied a little too hard, and she fell in love with gorgeous bad boy Adrian, who left her to die that day in Scoville Park. . . .

Amidst the music, the booze, the drugs, and the drama, her friends filled a notebook with heartbreakingly honest confessions of the moments that defined and shattered their young lives. Now, finally, Kara is ready to write her own.

--------------------------

Ballads of Suburbia looks so good! It looks like something a lot of people could relate to and enjoy. I've heard nothing but good things about Stephanie Kuehnert's other novel and I'm sure this one is just as good. I'm thinking that this will turn out to be a must-read but I guess I'll just have to pick it up in July and find out for myself!

That cover + that synopsis = holy crap, I have to read this.

Waiting On Wednesday (4)

Donut Days by Lara Zielin
Pub. Date: August 6, 2009
Publisher: Putnam

Emma has a lot going on. Her best friend’s not speaking to her, a boy she’s known all her life is suddenly smokin’ hot and in love with her, and oh yes, her evangelical minister parents may lose their church, especially if her mother keeps giving sermons saying Adam was a hermaphrodite.

But this weekend Emma’s only focused on Crispy Dream, a hot new donut franchise opening in town, where Harley bikers and Frodo wannabes camp out waiting to be the first ones served. Writing the best feature story on the camp for the local paper might just win Emma a scholarship to attend a non- Christian college. But soon enough Emma finds the donut camp isn’t quite the perfect escape from all her troubles at Living Word Redeemer.

----------------

A novel that takes place at and around a donut shop? Yes, please. I love donuts, particularly plain glazed ones from KrispyKremes. I would be craving sweets the entire time I read this one but at least I'd have a legitimate reason to go out and buy some. The plot sounds fun and just crazy enough to keep my attention. I'm so looking forward to this one!

Waiting On Wednesday (3)

Love Off-Limits by Whitney Lyles
Pub. Date: August 04, 2009
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing

Natalie should be the happiest girl in the world, dating Jeremy who is totally hot and perfect by everyone’s standards. But something just isn’t right. The seemingly flawless couple has been dating since freshman year, and now Natalie fears the spark may be fizzling…at least on her end. But she’s not sure if breaking up is the right thing to do.

Being such an expert in love (or so people think), Natalie gets coaxed into writing a romance column for the school newspaper. And soon she finds spending time with her editor, Matt, to be way worth the work. It seems like the answer’s staring her straight in the face. Dump Jeremy and go out with Matt. There’s just one catch; Matt is Jeremy’s best friend, and dumping your boyfriend to date his closest friend is just wrong…right?

--------

First off, I love the Simon Romantic Comedies. They're just cute and so much fun to read. That's what drew my attention to this book in the first place. Then the synopsis sounds really good, too. It sounds like something I could relate to. The cover made me laugh - how she's holding hands with one guy but looking at another.

Waiting On Wednesday (2)

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a synopsis for this one..
But isn't the cover pretty?

I've read books by Rachel Vail in the past and I absolutely adored them. So I think it's safe to say that this one will be no exception.

Gorgeous comes out on May 26, 2009.
